Shri Harbhajan Singh: A Visionary Leader and Champion of the Media Fraternity
Shri Harbhajan Singh took over The Indian Observer in 1970 from his legendary journalist father, Shri Durlab Singh. Through his hard work, unwavering commitment, and visionary leadership, he transformed the publication into one of India’s leading magazines focused on current and political affairs.
A multifaceted personality, Shri Harbhajan Singh was not only a journalist but also a social worker, educationist, and literary figure. In essence, he was a dynamic individual whose diverse talents and tireless efforts marked him as a genius par excellence. Patriotism and honesty coursed through his veins. He rose above narrow-minded thinking and was untouched by hatred, jealousy, or enmity. His generosity of spirit and goodwill embraced everyone who came into contact with him.
Recognizing the challenges faced by small and medium newspapers, he founded the All India Small and Medium Newspapers Federation (AISMNF), which over the past five decades has grown into a powerful and influential organization. Through his relentless advocacy, the Central Government extended various forms of support and relief to small and medium newspapers, including their representation in both Central and State media bodies.
To enhance international engagement and recognition, Shri Harbhajan Singh organized and led multiple delegations of Indian journalists to countries such as Russia, China, the UK, the USA, and across Europe and Southeast Asia—often on a reciprocal basis. The weight of this tremendous responsibility he bore with dedication and pride. His inspiring speeches at national and international conferences often stirred delegates to work passionately for the progress of their motherland.
His contributions to the media community have left a lasting legacy that will be remembered in the annals of Indian history. For his unparalleled dedication and efforts, he is fondly remembered as the “Messiah of Small and Medium Newspapers.”
